Research Spreadsheets

Throughout the research for this project, multiple spreadsheets had been created to help organize information. These detail everything from important figures in the community to relevant newspaper articles. Click the links below to view and access these spreadsheets.

  • Newspapers were extensively referenced throughout the research for this project. This spreadsheet collects many of the articles referenced, giving basic information such as title, date, author, subject. This is intended for future researchers interested in the history of the Black community of Niagara Falls. Many of these newspaper articles can be located for free via Fultonhistory.com (1890s-1972) or NYSHistoricNewspapers.org (1854-1918). Fulton History is better suited for searching for articles after 1918, while NYS Historic Newspapers is better for Pre-1918 articles.

  • The Green Book was an important guide to African American travelers between the 1940s - 1960s. It would list various businesses that were safe for Black patrons. This spreadsheet collects all of the businesses that were listed in Niagara Falls in the available editions of the book. To view the original scans, visit The New York Public Library's Website. Additionally the spreadsheet includes a information from a local Black directory which can be viewed at the Buffalo History Museum Library. This video also covers information on the Green Book in Niagara Falls, Ontario.

  • The City Directory is a powerful tool to understand the life of the changing neighborhood. This spreadsheet collects all samplings from the City Directory of the East Falls neighborhood. Early editions of the City Directory have been digitized by the Niagara Falls Public Library and are available here.

  • The 1910 Census marked the first serious documentation of the neighborhood after it had begun growing. This collects the names, addresses, and occupations of the original Black community that had helped to establish the neighborhood.

  • This spreadsheet outlines various statistics about the demographics and housing within the neighborhood. All information is has been gathered from SocialExplorer.com
